1. Introduction

Blue Skua LLC (“Blue Skua,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) develops Music Practice Focus (the “App”), an iPhone and iPad app that blocks distracting apps until you complete a short music practice challenge. This Privacy Policy explains what information the App handles, where that information lives, and the choices you have.

By downloading, installing, or using the App, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.

2. The Short Version

• There is no account. No sign-up, no email address, no password, no profile.
• Your practice data stays on your device. Sessions, theory answers, audio recordings, streaks, and settings are stored locally on your iPhone or iPad. We do not operate a sync service and we cannot see any of it.
• We never see which apps you block or how you use them. That information is handled by Apple's Screen Time frameworks and is not readable by us.
• We collect limited anonymous diagnostic and usage data through Firebase to fix crashes and understand which features get used. It is not linked to your identity and never contains your practice content or recordings.
• We do not sell your data, and we do not show ads or track you across other apps and websites.

3. Information Stored Only on Your Device

The following is created and kept locally on your device. It is not transmitted to Blue Skua and we have no ability to access it:

• Practice sessions — session type (timed practice, music theory, recording), duration, tempo, date and time, the piece or instrument you tag, and any notes you write.
• Music theory answers — the questions you were asked, your answers, and your accuracy per category.
• Audio recordings — recordings you make during a practice session are saved as audio files in the App's private storage on your device.
• Streaks, totals, and settings — day streak, best streak, total practice minutes, difficulty and category preferences, unlock settings, and the instrument you selected.

This data is stored in the App's own database and files, protected by iOS app sandboxing and your device's encryption. If you delete the App, this data is removed with it, so make a backup first if you want to keep it.

4. Screen Time, Blocked Apps, and Usage Reports

The App is built on Apple's Screen Time technologies (Family Controls, Managed Settings, and Device Activity). When you first set up the App, iOS asks you to grant Screen Time authorization. This authorization is required for the App to block and unblock apps.

Two things are important to understand about how Apple designed these frameworks:

• Your app selections are opaque to us. When you choose apps or categories to block, iOS gives the App anonymous, device-specific tokens rather than app names or bundle identifiers. Those tokens are stored on your device and are meaningless outside of it. We cannot tell which apps you selected, and neither can anyone reading the stored data off our end — because none of it reaches us.
• Screen time reports never leave your device. The weekly usage summary and top-apps list in the App are rendered inside an Apple-provided extension that iOS deliberately isolates: it can display your usage data to you, but it cannot send that data anywhere, including to us. We only ever see a picture of your usage in the same sense that you do — which is to say, we do not see it at all.

The App requests Screen Time authorization for your own device (individual authorization). It does not enroll you in, or report to, a remote management or parental monitoring service.

5. Microphone and Recordings

The “Record Yourself” practice challenge requires access to your microphone. iOS will ask for your permission the first time, and you can revoke it at any time in Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone.

Recordings are saved locally on your device and played back only by you. They are never uploaded to Blue Skua, never analyzed by us, and never shared with third parties. You can delete any recording from within the App.

6. Dictation and Speech Recognition

Where the App lets you dictate practice notes, it uses Apple's Speech framework. The App requests on-device speech recognition whenever your device supports it, so your voice does not leave your device. If your device or selected language does not support on-device recognition, iOS may send the audio to Apple for processing under Apple's Privacy Policy. Blue Skua does not receive your voice recordings or transcripts. You can disable speech recognition access at any time in Settings › Privacy & Security › Speech Recognition.

7. Notifications

The App may ask permission to send you notifications, such as practice reminders and alerts about your unlock window. These are local notificationsscheduled on your device. The App does not use push notifications, so no notification content is sent through our servers or Apple's push service on our behalf. You can turn notifications off at any time in Settings › Notifications.

8. Anonymous Analytics and Crash Reports

To find bugs and understand which features are worth improving, the App uses Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics, provided by Google. This is the only category of information that leaves your device and reaches us.

What this includes:

• Crash and error reports, including the type of crash, the code path involved, the App version, the device model, and the iOS version.
• Aggregate feature-usage events, such as that a timed practice session was started, and non-identifying parameters about it such as the selected duration.
• A random, Firebase-generated app instance identifier and coarse information such as your country or region, as determined by Google.

What this never includes:

• Your name, email address, phone number, or any account identifier — the App has none.
• Your audio recordings, practice notes, session history, or theory answers.
• The identity of the apps you block, or your screen time usage.
• Your precise location, contacts, photos, calendar, or health data.

We use this information only in aggregate. To be precise: the app instance identifier is pseudonymous rather than strictly anonymous, so we describe this data as not identifying you rather than as being impossible to correlate at all. We make no attempt to link it to a real person, and we hold no other information that would let us do so.

9. Purchases

Music Practice Focus offers a monthly subscription, an annual subscription with an introductory free trial, and a one-time lifetime purchase. All purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store using your Apple Account.

• We never see or receive your payment card details, billing address, or Apple Account credentials.
• The App uses Apple's StoreKit to check whether a valid purchase exists on your device and unlock features accordingly. This check happens between your device and Apple.
• Apple provides us with aggregated, non-identifying sales and subscription reporting through App Store Connect. It does not identify individual customers.

Apple's handling of your purchase information is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.

10. Backup and Restore

The App includes an optional Backup & Restore feature that packages your practice database and audio recordings into a single file, which you then save or send wherever you choose through the iOS share sheet.

• The backup file is created on your device. It is not uploaded to us.
• Once you save or send a backup, it is governed by whatever service you chose — for example iCloud Drive, Files, another cloud storage app, or a message. We have no access to and no control over the copy you created.
• Your device may also include the App's data in a full iCloud or Finder device backup. That backup is Apple's, and is subject to Apple's terms and privacy policy.
• You are responsible for storing and deleting your own backup files.

11. Family Sharing and Household Use

Where a purchase is designated as shareable in the App Store, Family Sharing lets other members of your Family Sharing group use the paid features. Family Sharing shares access to the App, not data: each person's blocked apps, practice history, recordings, and streaks stay on that person's own device and are not visible to other family members through the App.

If you set up the App for a minor in your household, you are responsible for reviewing this policy and the Terms of Use on their behalf.

12. What We Do Not Do

• We do not sell, rent, or trade personal information. We never have.
• We do not share your information with data brokers or advertising networks.
• We do not build advertising or marketing profiles about you.
• We do not read the content of your other apps, messages, or notifications.
• We do not collect your location, contacts, photos, calendar, or health data.

13. Legal Disclosure

We may disclose information we actually hold if required to do so by law or in response to valid legal process, or where necessary to protect the rights, safety, or property of Blue Skua LLC, our users, or the public. In practice, the information we hold is limited to the anonymous analytics and crash data described in Section 8; we cannot produce your practice data, recordings, or blocked-app selections because we never receive them.

If Blue Skua LLC is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, any information we hold may be transferred as part of that transaction, and this policy will continue to apply to it unless and until you are notified of a change.

14. Data Retention

• On-device data is retained for as long as you keep it. You control it entirely: delete individual sessions or recordings in the App, or delete the App to remove all of it.
• Analytics and crash data is retained according to Firebase's retention settings, which we configure to the shortest period that is practical for diagnosing issues.

15. Data Security

Because the App keeps your practice data on your device and has no user accounts, the most important protections are the ones iOS provides: app sandboxing and device encryption. Keeping a device passcode enabled and your iOS version current is the single most effective thing you can do to protect this data.

Analytics and crash data is transmitted over encrypted connections (TLS) to Google's Firebase infrastructure. No method of transmission or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

16. Children's Privacy

The App is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The App has no account system, no user-generated content sharing, no chat, and no advertising. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us at [email protected] and we will delete it promptly.

17. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, port, or restrict processing of your personal information, and to object to certain processing.

Most of these rights you can exercise directly and immediately: your practice data is on your device, so you can view, edit, export, and delete it yourself at any time without asking us. For the limited analytics and crash data described in Section 8, contact us at [email protected]. Because that data is not linked to your identity, we may need additional information — such as your Firebase app instance identifier — to locate it, and in some cases we may be unable to identify it at all. We will respond within 30 days where applicable law requires it.

18. California Privacy Rights

If you are a California resident, you have the right to:

• Know what personal information we collect and how it is used.
• Request deletion of personal information we hold about you.
• Opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by the CCPA/CPRA.
• Not be discriminated against for exercising your privacy rights.

19. EEA, UK, and Swiss Users

Blue Skua LLC is the data controller for the limited data described in Section 8. Our legal bases for processing are:

• Legitimate interests — using crash reports and aggregate usage statistics to keep the App working and improve it, balanced against the minimal privacy impact of data that does not identify you.
• Contract — verifying your purchase with Apple so we can provide the paid features you bought.
• Legal obligation — where disclosure or retention is required by law.

Data processed by Google Firebase may be transferred to and stored in the United States under appropriate safeguards, including the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. You have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last Updated” date above and, for material changes, provide notice in the App or by other reasonable means. Your continued use of the App after an update takes effect means you accept the revised policy.
